Aircraft Painter

About the Role

The Aircraft Painter coats the surfaces of aircraft with paint, lacquer, epoxy, resin, or other materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other devices. Responsibilities include removing old paint, performing preparatory work, treating and preparing various surfaces, and applying coating materials to meet protection requirements.

Responsibilities

• Remove old paint from aircraft using liquid paint remover and scrapers.
• Perform preparatory work, including obtaining supplies, setting up ladders and scaffolds, and covering items with drop cloths and tape.
• Prepare surfaces (wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, etc.) by scraping, wire brushing, masking, spackling, and sanding.
• Clean and degrease surfaces, removing oil, wax, scale, dirt, and old paint to ensure proper adhesion of coating materials.
• Mask and cover portions of surfaces not to be painted.
• Mix, thin, blend, match, tint, and tone coating materials following oral and written directives.
• Apply primers, paints, varnishes, and shellacs using standard techniques to meet surface protection requirements.
• Perform fluid flushing and air vacuum cleaning of aircraft fuel tanks.
• Remove fuel tank braces, anti-leak sealant, and polyurethane paint from fuel tank inner surfaces.
• Paint insignia, letters, or numerals on aircraft surfaces using stencils.
• Assist higher-grade mechanics with cleaning aircraft parts using solvents and other cleaning solutions.
• Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

• Two or more years of recent experience in paint preparation, painting, sanding, and scuffing.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (U.S. citizenship required).
• Ability to meet physical requirements for respirator certifications.
• Knowledge of aircraft painting, preparation, and related forms.
• Ability to work independently with strong decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

• Frequently required to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
• Frequently lifts parts and equipment up to 20 pounds; occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds (mechanical devices used for heavy lifting).

Pay

The starting hourly rate for this position is $36.05 per hour.
