Aircraft Mechanic-Powerplant performs organizational, intermediate, and limited depot-level maintenance, including inspection, operational test, repair, modification, and troubleshooting on assigned aircraft, components, and equipment. Applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems and provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains aircraft main, auxiliary, secondary power systems, fuel systems, engine-level, and bleed air components.
  • Performs troubleshooting, testing, low and high power turn operational checks of power plant systems.
  • Replaces or repairs worn or damaged components such as fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine-mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
  • Removes engine from aircraft, disassembles, inspects organizational-level parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, repairs or replaces defective parts, and reassembles and installs the engine.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, technical directives, planning documents, test specifications, technical publications, procedures, and applicable safety manuals.
  • May perform off-site service on assigned detachments.
  • Must have recent experience with F-18A-F, EA-18G, E-2C, or F-16A&B aircraft.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years’ experience within the last eight years in aircraft maintenance, with the last two years in the military or with a government aviation maintenance contractor.
  • Experience in corrosion detection, treatment, and prevention.
  • Qualified according to field of expertise and level of maintenance assigned.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance (US Citizenship required).
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work all assigned shifts and schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High degree of expertise in aircraft systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable maintenance/technical manuals, publications, instructions, and special tools/test equipment.
  • Familiarity with operational capabilities and limitations of aircraft systems.
  • Thorough working knowledge of corrosion detection, prevention, and treatment.
  • Customer-oriented approach.
  • Capable of cross-training into other specialties.

Licensing & Certification Requirements

  • Formal/Specialized Training or equivalent.
  • Hazardous Waste Communication Training.
  • FOD and TCP Awareness Training.
  • Security Clearance Awareness Training.
  • COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 Program Awareness.
  • NALCOMIS/OOMA trained (preferred).
  • ESD Trained (preferred).
  • Support Equipment Operator’s License (Tow Tractor, N2 Servicing Trailer, and Mobile Start Unit at a minimum).
  • Collateral Duty Inspector experience (preferred).
  • Egress System Checkout (preferred).
  • Plane Captain Qualified (preferred).
  • Aircraft Towing Certified.
  • Aircraft Brake Rider Certified.
  • Operational Risk Management (ORM) Training.
  • Fuel Surveillance Trained.
  • Engine Run (1 T/M/S minimum) Troubleshooter/Final Checker Certified.

Working Environment

  • Work is typically performed in a hangar, shop, or flight line environment.
  • May require lifting objects up to 70 pounds.
  • Requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work conditions may range from comfortable to extreme weather (e.g., temperature changes, wind, rain, snow, ice).
  • May be required to work in high-noise areas.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or electrical shock hazards may occur.

Pay

Hiring hourly rate of pay: $54.47 (set by Collective Bargaining Agreement).
