About the role

Join a fast-paced, supportive team of engineers, scientists, and programmers working to reduce greenhouse gas and criteria pollutant emissions from heavy-duty trucks. The Strategic Planning and Development section assesses emission control technology and helps craft CARB's strategy for reducing emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. The Air Resources Technician II (ART II) will play an important role in expanding California's heavy-duty inspection/maintenance (I/M) program to ensure vehicles operate with low criteria pollutant emission levels.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze data to support the regulatory amendment process.
• Research technologies and strategies, including effectiveness, cost, fleet practices, manufacturer practices, and characteristics of air pollution reduction programs.
• Summarize and analyze data, perform calculations, and write/edit correspondence and reports.
• Respond to questions from stakeholders and public information requests.
• Collaborate with other CARB teams and external agencies to support program implementation.
• Perform administrative tasks such as preparing handouts, arranging meeting logistics, and providing support to managers and specialists.
• Represent the program at outreach events to educate stakeholders on regulations and compliance requirements.

• Ability to analyze large datasets, use code/script to streamline processes, and use Excel and/or SQL.
• Proficiency in synthesizing and reporting information using Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to defend data and conclusions professionally.
• Reliable attendance and predictable work hours.
• Knowledge of basic air pollution control, internal combustion engine operation, on-board diagnostics, and California's air pollution control regulatory process is desirable.
• Background or experience with vehicular inspection and maintenance programs is a plus.

Qualifications

Applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ), a 1-2 page narrative describing how their skills, knowledge, abilities, education, training, and experience qualify them for the position. The SOQ must address why the applicant is qualified to support CARB's regulations to reduce emissions from the heavy-duty vehicle sector through optimal inspection and maintenance.

Pay

$4,036.00 - $5,034.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
