Air Inspector

Hiring range: $59,754 - $84,913. Full-time position.

About the role

This position primarily conducts inspections, reviews records and permits, evaluates reports, provides technical assistance, and investigates complaints to evaluate compliance with the Air Pollution Control Law and Regulations. This position may conduct ambient air monitoring as needed and initiates enforcement actions in cases of non-compliance to protect, enhance, and preserve air quality in Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Independently conduct air compliance inspections and determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and permits.
• Investigate complaints, document observations, compliance status, and recommendations using DEQ software and templates.
• Document and update enforcement actions in the database within agency timeframes.
• Collect data/samples and perform Q/A on ambient air monitoring stations in accordance with federal standards and the Division of Air Monitoring Quality Assurance Manual, regulations, and other requirements.
• Maintain complete and accurate logs of records and submit reports.

Requirements

• Knowledge of scientific and/or manufacturing/commercial/industrial/mechanical processes and air pollution control regulations and standards.
• Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Read and interpret technical documents and understand mechanical and industrial processes.
  • Analyze and solve problems.
  • Apply established policy, procedures, and regulations.
  • Use computers for word processing and data management.
  • Climb ladders, work at heights, and maneuver in tight spaces.
• Combination of education and/or training/work experience demonstrating competence in environmental, engineering/physical/biological, or related science.
• Completion of EPA Method 9 Certification within 6 months of employment and maintain certification as necessary.
• Valid driver’s license to operate a state-owned or leased vehicle.
• Use of protective equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, and other required protective clothing in industrial settings.
