Starting Salary Range

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Associate's Degree - High 30's to Mid 40's. Bachelor's Degree - High 40's to Low 60's.

Starting salary is dependent on education, directly related experience and internal equity. After completing the second probationary semester, the potential exists to earn additional compensation by teaching overload and spring/summer sessions. This additional compensation varies based on several factors, including educational level and step. For example, a faculty member with a Master’s degree at Step 0 who teaches 10 hours of overload during the fall and winter semesters would earn an additional $18,000. Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, full-time faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section:

Specific Teaching Assignment

Faculty members will be responsible for teaching classes in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R).

Supervisory Responsibility

Faculty are sometimes called upon to perform quasi-supervisory responsibilities, particularly in their role as Coordinators.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in HVAC, Mechanical, Technology, Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a HVAC related Associate’s Degree OR a minimum of 30 credit hours in HVAC related courses;
  • OR a minimum of 30 credit hours in HVAC related courses; and a Journeyman’s license in HVAC, a minimum of 10 (ten) years of (full-time equivalency) practical experience needed in residential/commercial HVAC&R;
  • Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
  • Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • College teaching experience
  • Certification in refrigerant handling or in fields related to HVAC such as journeyman cards, industry certifications, etc.
  • Ability to fabricate duct work
  • Familiarity with the use of competency-based modularized courseware and instruction.
  • Experience in distance learning formats.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time. They are required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
  • Must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversations, face-to-face conversations, or written documentation.
  • Must be able to utilize all programs on a computer independently and efficiently (particularly the internet, Word, and the student database).
  • Must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects of 50 pounds.
  • If applicable, must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the industry. Must be able to handle and mix chemicals properly and safely; and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Work Schedule

Although full-time faculty are obligated to teach during fall and winter, the nature of their full-time job requires them to perform many of their professional responsibilities year-round. Faculty are required to maintain engagement hours and will make additional provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable. Mott Community College recognizes that remote work can benefit the student, employee and College and will permit employee duties to be performed remotely when it is appropriate, reasonable and feasible based on the College’s mission and priorities. MCC employees follow a well-defined remote work program. The opportunity for remote work is reviewed on a case by case basis and dependent on many factors including the nature of the job duties and person’s suitability for remote work. All hybrid work opportunities are approved by the immediate supervisor and Executive member.
