About Healthful Stories

Healthful Stories is a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) patient advocacy nonprofit dedicated to surfacing the real patient journey. We conduct structured, longitudinal interviews with individuals living with chronic and complex health conditions as a means of providing critical information to others navigating the same illnesses. Our work produces rich, firsthand accounts of what it means to seek care, manage symptoms, and navigate a health system that often falls short. Our volunteers are at the heart of this work. We engage skilled contributors in patient interviewing, content development, video editing, and community outreach to give professionals and students with backgrounds in public health, journalism, communications, technology, and the health sciences a meaningful way to apply their skills in service of the patient voice. We serve patients, caregivers, researchers, and the broader healthcare community and all who benefit from understanding illness as people actually experience it.

About the Role

As our AI Content & Communications Volunteer, you will build and maintain AI-assisted workflows that help our team draft social content, donor communications, and outreach messaging faster and more consistently without sacrificing the tone and editorial care our mission requires. This isn't about replacing human judgment; every piece of content is still reviewed before it goes out. It's about giving our Social Media Manager, Fundraiser, and Outreach Coordinator a running head start instead of a blank page.

Responsibilities

  • Building reusable prompt templates and workflows for social media drafts, donor outreach emails, and community outreach messaging, grounded in our brand voice and mission
  • Setting up lightweight automation (e.g., Zapier, Make, or similar) to connect content drafting with our scheduling and communication tools
  • Creating a prompt library and simple documentation so non-technical volunteers can use these workflows independently
  • Iterating on templates based on feedback from our content and outreach team
  • Staying current on responsible use of AI tools for nonprofit communications, including accuracy and tone safeguards for sensitive health content

Qualifications

  • Experience with LLM tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) and prompt engineering
  • Familiarity with automation platforms like Zapier, Make, or n8n is a strong plus
  • Strong writing instincts — you can tell the difference between AI-generated content that sounds right and content that sounds hollow
  • Comfort building tools and documentation for non-technical teammates to use
  • Sensitivity to the fact that this content touches real people's health experiences, and discretion accordingly

What you'll gain

Hands-on experience applying AI tools to real nonprofit communications workflows — a genuinely differentiated credential as organizations increasingly look for people who can responsibly operationalize AI, not just talk about it. You'll see your systems used directly by our team, with visible impact on how much we can produce and how consistently our voice comes through.
