About the Role

The Contra Costa County Agricultural Commissioner's office is seeking an enthusiastic professional for an exciting career opportunity as an Agricultural Biologist and Weights & Measures Inspector I. This is the entry-level position in the series, working under the direction of a Deputy Agricultural Commissioner-Sealer of Weights and Measures. The role involves conducting inspections and investigations in licensed disciplines and may assist higher-level inspectors in all disciplines.

What You Will Typically Be Responsible For

• Testing commercial weighing and measuring devices
• Conducting audits and price verification inspections
• Conducting complaint investigations
• Inspecting parcels for plant material and quarantine compliance
• Conducting pesticide monitoring inspections
• Scheduling inspection combinations to optimize efficiency
• Managing assigned workload

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process. Appointees must meet the licensing requirements as established by the California Code of Regulation and within nine months must obtain a minimum of at least one valid license as an Agricultural Biologist or Weights and Measures Inspector.

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Agriculture, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Law Enforcement, Commerce, Marketing, or a closely related field that would qualify the candidate to take the California Department of Food and Agriculture's licensing exams.

Desirable Qualifications

• Class A driver's license
• Experience operating heavy equipment
• Possession of one or more CDFA county agricultural inspector/biologist licenses
• Technical Training
• Experience enforcing California laws and regulations

In addition to the base salary, the County offers an excellent benefits plan which includes a county contribution to health, dental, and vision insurance plans. Other benefits include:

• $150 per month to an employee's account in the Contra Costa County Deferred Compensation Plan for permanent employees who meet specific criteria
• $275 safety shoe reimbursement for each two-year period
• $200 per month salary differential for bilingual pay if designated by the appointing authority
• 2.5% longevity pay differential after 10 years of service in Contra Costa County

Selection Process

Training and Experience Questionnaire: Candidates will be required to complete a training and experience questionnaire at the time of filing. The responses will be used to evaluate candidates' relevant education, training and/or experience as it relates to the classification. (Weighted 100%)
