Agency Attorney, Lev. III
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Office of the First Deputy Commissioner oversees critical administrative and operational functions in accordance with the Department's mission. The Discipline Unit within the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner is responsible for managing and overseeing the internal disciplinary process within the NYPD.
About the Role
The Discipline Unit conducts thorough case reviews of misconduct allegations, and makes recommendations to the Police Commissioner's Office. The Agency Attorney in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner will help provide legal insight in the comprehensive review and analysis of cases of alleged misconduct for potential disciplinary action.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing, analyzing, and tracking cases of alleged misconduct
- Collaborating with the Legal Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, Department Advocate, and Professional Standards Division
- Preparing and presenting cases to the executive staff in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner
- Providing legal guidance on disciplinary matters
Requirements
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar
- Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086)
- Experience prosecuting / litigating misconduct, public integrity and corruption cases preferred
- Thorough knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Federal Law, the NYC Administrative Code, and Rules of the City of New York
- Ability to manage a diverse complex, and at times unpredictable workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues
Qualifications
- Two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment for AL III
- One year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment for AL II
Skills
- Experience prosecuting / litigating misconduct, public integrity and corruption cases preferred
- Experience in the New York City administrative discipline system in New York State strongly preferred

$92,525.00 – $136,593.00
