NYCHA’s Law Department, General Litigation Division, seeks an attorney to handle high-stakes employment and fair-housing litigation in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies, and to defend appeals from agency determinations on tenancy terminations, applicant eligibility, lease succession, and Section 8 benefits.
Responsibilities
- Litigate complex employment and housing civil-rights actions (discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, failure-to-accommodate, etc.) in state and federal courts, including fact investigation, discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeal.
- Draft pleadings, memoranda, affidavits, and other documents in Article 78 and Article 81 proceedings.
- Appear for oral argument before trial and appellate courts.
- Investigate and respond to discrimination charges filed with HUD, EEOC, NYS Division of Human Rights, and NYC Commission on Human Rights.
- Recommend, negotiate, and draft settlement agreements on behalf of the agency.
- Respond to court notices, agency communications, and internal stakeholder inquiries regarding active or potential litigation.
- Research legal questions and provide advice to other agency departments.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all NYCHA proceedings.
Requirements
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- One year of post-admission U.S. legal experience or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Intern (30086).
- Must remain a member in good standing of the New York State Bar for the duration of employment.
Qualifications
- Assignment Level II: one year at AL I or two years of comparable post-bar experience in relevant practice areas.
- Assignment Level III: two years in AL I/II or three years of comparable post-bar experience in relevant practice areas.
- Admission to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals (preferred).
- Knowledge of EEO and housing laws (Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FMLA, Rehabilitation Act, Fair Housing Act, Housing Act of 1937, NY Executive Law, NYC Administrative Code).
- Strong legal analysis, writing, and factual-investigation skills.

Pay
$106,404 – $120,000 per year.
