After-School Bus Driver
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Program Director of the Family and Youth Enrichment department, the School Bus Driver is primarily responsible for safely operating the school bus on an on-call basis depending on needs of Armed Services YMCA San Diego programs and events. The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations and rules of conduct.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life
- Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedure
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
- Perform minor maintenance duties such as filling up with gas, lubricate engine, check fluid levels and other duties as assigned
- Clean the bus as scheduled and/or required
- Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
- Advise the Senior Administrative Officer of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Maintain schedules and maintain order on the School Bus
- Pick up and deliver students as per a set schedule
- Keep student count on the school bus on a daily basis
- Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers including emergency evacuation procedures
- Maintain order and discipline on the School bus
- Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary problems
INTERACTION
This position may provide information to donors, potential donors, program participants, volunteers, partners, ASYMCA SD Board and staff, and others from the community.

EDUCATION/YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Minimum: At least two years of school bus driving for either a school district or other youth-related organization (i.e., YMCA & Boys & Girls Club). Mandatory twenty hours of classroom instruction and twenty hours of behind-the-wheel bus training.
Any combination of educational and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of California highway and school bus law and regulations
- Knowledge of how to work with regular education children and children with special needs
- Knowledge of school bus equipment cleaning standards and procedures
- A professional demeanor with an aptitude for analytical thinking and problem solving.
- Responsible, well organized, and demonstrate initiative.
- Must be accurate and detail oriented, possess strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a complex and fast paced environment.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.

- Must have excellent customer service skills.

TYPES OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Standard office equipment and machines, such as a telephone, a personal computer, a multifunction copier, and a 10-key calculator.
- School bus dashboard control center, bus engine compartment, whole unit school bus knowledge.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- The School Bus Driver is required to have a Class C Commercial Driver’s License with the Passenger Endorsement issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Along with a current CPR/ First Aid Certificate, and a Medical Examiner's Health Certificate.
- Additionally, must have reliable transportation and a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the organization’s insurance carrier standards.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work in an office setting with constant travel to other locations in San Diego County.
- Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel and uses hands, arms and legs for dexterity, balance and climbing stairs frequently. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Occasionally lifts, carries and balances objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Prioritizes and multi-tasks work and projects requiring good memory, concentration and analytical thinking.
- Work in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
