After Hours Telephone Triage Nurse (Per Diem)

About the Role

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a per diem After Hours Telephone Triage Nurse. The majority of scheduling needs will be for weekends and holidays, with shifts based on operational need. Telephone triage, Barton Schmitt Telephone Triage Protocol, and pediatric experience are preferred.

The nurse at this level demonstrates competence in Telehealth nursing and clinical leadership skills, contributing to standards of care and unit goals. Serves as a role model and preceptor for new employees while participating in efforts to increase nursing knowledge. The nurse must demonstrate competence in caring for patients with a wide variety of health issues and assists the Manager with administrative issues affecting clinical practices.

Minimum weekend requirement: 18 hours per 6-week schedule period. Holiday requirement: 1 winter and 1 summer holiday per year. Shifts available include evenings, nights, and weekends, with potential for day shifts based on unit needs.

Responsibilities

• Follows the Nursing Process to deliver safe telephone triage care: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Collects and synthesizes complex assessment data, using critical thinking to determine the most appropriate protocol and disposition.
• Develops a plan of care and communicates/collaborates with families, caregivers, and healthcare providers to ensure understanding and compliance.
• Documents all aspects of telephone encounters.
• Role models professional appearance, behaviors, and teamwork while promoting a positive image of Nursing.
• Leads unit improvements, measures outcomes, and ensures staff incorporate professional standards and regulatory requirements.
• Follows hospital policies regarding HIPAA and privacy.
• Reads, analyzes, and synthesizes nursing and scholarly articles; shares knowledge with unit staff and applies research findings to clinical practice.
• Identifies learning needs, assists in developing patient education materials, and participates in staff education programs.
• Demonstrates healthcare informatics competency, including effective use of electronic health records and clinical information systems.
• Participates in promoting quality, efficient, and cost-effective care while managing time and resources effectively.

Requirements

• Technical Diploma in Nursing – Required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing – Preferred.
• At least five (5) years of registered nursing experience – Required.
• Pediatric experience – Preferred.

Skills and Abilities

• Computer Competency:
  • Basic use of a computer (mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports).
  • Basic use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Skype).

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) – Required upon hire.
• Registered Nurse (New Jersey) – Required upon hire.

Pay

Salary range: $15.00 - $507.00 hourly. Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs; part-time pay will be adjusted accordingly.
