AFIS Operator
About the role
The Ohio Attorney General's Office is seeking an AFIS Operator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section. This position is based at the BCI Headquarters in London, OH. BCI is the state’s official crime lab, serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families. It provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request, with offices throughout the state available 24/7 at no cost to requesting agencies.
BCI staff include special agents, forensic scientists, criminal intelligence analysts, and identification specialists who support local law enforcement. The bureau is organized into three main divisions: Identifications, Investigations, and Laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Process civilian or criminal information using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (CAFIS).
- Enter information into AFIS using multiple input devices (e.g., keyboard, bar code reader/printer, scanner).
- Open mail and prepare civilian or criminal fingerprint cards for scanning, scan fingerprints, enter demographic information, and file cards accordingly.
- Enter demographic information from applicant fingerprint cards and update background checks.
- Generate and prepare various documents and applicant letters for mailing.
- Retrieve data from Computerized Criminal History (CCH) and Interstate Identification Index (III).
- Train other AFIS operators on Identification systems and processes.
- Contact the Quality Assurance unit regarding data corrections or training needs for submitting agencies.
Civilian Unit Duties
- Submit Webcheck (electronic background check) transactions for walk-in applicants.
- Answer phone calls from the public regarding applicant background checks.
- Respond to questions from walk-in constituents.
Criminal Unit Duties
- Research and verify accuracy of demographic and arrest record information.
- Research disputes, pull files, and verify applicant, arrest, or disposition information.
- Answer and make phone inquiries regarding arrest information and court dispositions.
Requirements
- Formal education in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and in writing and speaking common English vocabulary.
- 12 months of experience or training in the use of AFIS or CCH equipment or equivalent.
- Typing skill of 45 words per minute.

Schedule
Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
