Aerosol Science Research Fellowship
About the role
The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a graduate or postdoctoral research fellowship. As a research fellow, you will join a community of scientists to support our mission to conduct innovative research and development to address existing and future defense-related challenges.
Responsibilities
- Engage with DEVCOM-CBC staff to provide expertise in methodology development for aerosol threat characterization.
- Participate in establishing new aerosol methodologies and providing expertise in bioaerosol collection and sampling techniques.
- Gain experience across multiple discipline areas, including biological sciences, respiratory protection, biological detection and decontamination.
Qualifications
- Completed within the past 5 years, or currently pursuing, a Doctoral degree in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Defense, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or similar.
- U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a Doctoral degree in the above fields within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
- Experience and/or education in aerosol science, microbiology, virology, respiratory protection masks, aerosol collection, and biological detection are highly competitive.

Pay
Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.
Schedule
This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command - Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM-CBC) is the primary Department of Defense technical organization for non-medical chemical and biological defense. DEVCOM-CBC activities at the Edgewood portion of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, provide an extraordinary capability against emerging biological and chemical threats by merging intelligence assessments with its world-renowned chemistry, biology, physiology and engineering expertise at every stage of the acquisition life cycle. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
