About the role

The Virtual Mental Health Intake RN is a Registered Nurse who provides competent and thorough intake services by conducting initial screening of psychiatric and medical needs of all incoming referrals for psychiatric and chemical dependency admissions. Utilizes virtual assessment skills through phone triage and patient assessments including triaging patients in acute crisis and disposition to correct level of care. Provides competent and thorough mental status assessment when an involuntary hold evaluation is required. Triages to the most appropriate level of care, according to severity of illness and determines patient placement at the appropriate level. Provides illness advice and self-care intervention, identifying resources, consulting and referring. Uses the nursing process, input from physicians, and Sutter Health's approved telephone nursing guidelines and protocols to maintain highly efficient operations, to provide quality care, and to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial screening of psychiatric and medical needs for incoming referrals.
  • Perform virtual assessments via phone triage and patient evaluations, including triaging patients in acute crisis.
  • Determine the correct level of care and appropriate patient placement based on severity of illness.
  • Provide mental status assessments for involuntary hold evaluations.
  • Offer illness advice, self-care interventions, and identify resources for consultation and referral.
  • Utilize the nursing process, physician input, and approved guidelines to ensure quality care and positive patient outcomes.
  • Analyze and manage problems, situations, and procedures to provide effective solutions.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with diverse audiences, including patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Maintain patient privacy and protect protected health information (PHI).
  • Respond appropriately to unsafe or emergency situations.
  • Build collaborative relationships with peers, physicians, nurses, administrators, and the public.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • RN-Registered Nurse license in California (must be able to acquire prior to starting).
  • RN-Registered Nurse license in state of residence (preferred).

Qualifications

  • 1 year of mental health experience.
  • 2 years of practical nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, urgent care, or emergency room/department.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Professional knowledge of clinical nursing protocols, regulations, and institutional standards of care, with an emphasis on disease processes, emergencies, health sciences, and pharmacology.
  • Advanced clinical knowledge of medical diagnoses, procedures, protocols, treatments, and terminology, including state and federal regulations.
  • Solid analytical and project management skills, including problem-solving and recognizing alternatives.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and interviewing skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and electronic medical/health records.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, sometimes with rapidly changing priorities.

Schedule

  • Full Time (36 hours per week).
  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts.
  • Variable days of the week, including rotating weekends.

Pay

Pay Range is $38.87 to $54.42 per hour. The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs.
