Advanced Practice Provider - Preadmission Testing (PAT)

This outpatient preadmission clinic APP role evaluates and optimizes patients prior to surgery in a collaborative perioperative care environment.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, no weekends or call requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care in collaboration with the Attending Physician.
• Care for patients with acute and chronic complaints, including histories and physicals, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing, treating injuries/illnesses, assisting with surgical procedures, counseling patients, and prescribing medication and invasive procedures as defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
• Assess health status through health histories, physical examinations, initiating screenings, diagnostic tests, and direct patient care.
• Initiate emergency procedures as needed and practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
• Make rounds with attending physicians as necessary and supervise/coordinate patient care and support staff activities.
• Document all pertinent information in the patient’s medical record and interpret data to develop treatment plans.
• Formulate and prioritize short-term and long-term therapeutic plans, incorporating physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects of care.
• Develop strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption within the specialty area.
• Establish priorities to meet health needs of individuals, families, or communities and maintain effective communication with the healthcare team.
• Coordinate care between primary and specialty health care services when needed.
• Function as a consultant to other healthcare professionals regarding routine and unusual therapeutic interventions.
• Serve as a liaison, translator, and negotiator for staff, patients, and families.
• Collaborate in developing, implementing, communicating, and monitoring multidisciplinary plans of care for complex patients.
• Provide patient education to patients, family members, or other caregivers.
• Train residents, fellows, and other healthcare staff in the specialty area.
• Participate in continual assessment and revision of practices and procedures in the specialty area.
• Promote teamwork through effective communication and feedback.
• Utilize current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care for identified patient populations.
• Contribute to the profession through participation in research, publications, consultation, and/or educational activities.
• Demonstrate knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area.
• Incorporate clinical judgment in ethical decision-making and practice principles of ethics in patient care decisions.
• Promote interdisciplinary collaborative processes to resolve ethical dilemmas.
• Use negotiation, mediation, collaboration, compromise, and accommodation skills to assist families with ethical decisions.
• Examine patient values impacting treatment decision-making preferences and recognize patient rights as a foundation for ethical decisions.
• Seek opportunities for professional growth through organizational affiliations and collaborative relationships.
• Assess own learning needs and develop a plan for professional growth.
• Enhance professional development through educational programs, literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
• Participate in teaching programs and continuing education to maintain competencies and meet re-certification requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned and participate in special projects to support the mission of VCU Health.
• Provide assistance to team members and accept alternate assignments as required.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.
• Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant.
• Current national certification as appropriate for the role.
• Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by-laws for specific job titles.
• Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) may be required at the department level.

Preferred Qualifications

• Service-specific education and certification.
• Three years of previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Previous experience in an academic healthcare system.

• Use of latex gloves.
• Exposure to toxic/caustic/chemicals/detergents, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, gaseous risks.
