Advanced Practice Provider - Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner - Oncology Rapid Assessment Clinic - Full - Time , Rotating
About the role
The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) will join the University of Chicago Medicine’s Oncology Rapid Assessment Clinic (ORAC), providing comprehensive direct patient care management. The role involves autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments for hematology/oncology patients. Responsibilities include healthcare delivery, patient services, educational and research support, and administrative activities under the direction of the Cancer Service Line leadership.
The Oncology Rapid Assessment Clinic (ORAC) is an APP-staffed clinic focused on urgent, same-day or next-day assessment and treatment for cancer patients experiencing symptoms of malignancy, toxicities, or side effects from cancer treatments. After an orientation period, the APP will work autonomously and collaboratively with the ORAC team, utilizing evidence-based practice in close coordination with University of Chicago heme/onc faculty, APPs, pharmacists, and nurses. Training will cover management of hematologic and solid tumor malignancies, as well as oncologic emergencies such as neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome, neurotoxicity, DIC, HLH, sepsis, and cord compression.
Responsibilities
- Take patient history, conduct examinations, and diagnose illness
- Evaluate patients and order and interpret laboratory tests
- Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services
Requirements
Nurse Practitioner
- Master's Degree of Science in Nursing
- Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the ANCC or AANP
- Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers
- At least 1 year of inpatient nursing experience preferred but not required
- Previous oncology, urgent care, or ED experience preferred
- Acute Care certification preferred
Physician Assistant
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
- Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration
- At least 1 year of experience in hematology/oncology, urgent care, or ED preferred
