Advanced Practice Practitioner, Occupational Health
Overview
In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health has more than 50,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world. With over 50 years of service to the Yale community, our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy.
Responsibilities
- Provides preventive counseling on injury prevention, exposure prevention and immunization updates as they pertain to specialized job categories for employee
- Conduct pre-placement/periodic health evaluations and job-related medical clearances as assigned.
- Affirms the medical history of patients and determines health status.
- Conducts complete physical examinations as required by policy, or as circumstances reasonably warrant.
- Determines fitness-for-duty/return-to-work readiness; recommend restrictions and accommodations in collaboration with HR and Safety leadership.
- Evaluates work-related injuries/exposures; coordinates follow-up care, post-exposure management, and required testing.
- Provides medical evaluation and treatment to employees and student workers.
- Obtains and analyzes patient history and updates medical records and charts to reflect current state of health.
- Advises/ counsels patients on diagnostic results. Prescribes medications and provides instruction regarding medication management.
- Collaborates with departmental leadership, determines the need for additional evaluation or referral to specialty care when indicated.
- Maintains accurate, confidential clinical documentation.
- Performs evaluations on employees who are injured at work and assists the worker’s compensation carrier to develop a treatment plan and a successful return to work plan.
- Makes evaluations on patients who are injured at work and follows practice guidelines in accordance with departmental and organizational leadership.
- Collaborates with team members in all departments (clinicians, RNs, and auxiliary staff) to provide quality, seamless care.
- Participates in education sessions within the departments and attends regular Yale Health medical rounds.
- Contributes to quality improvement, tracking, and reporting of employee health metrics and trends.
- Partners with Safety/Infection Prevention to reduce risk through education, surveillance, and prevention initiatives.

Required Skills And Abilities
- Experience in caring for occupational injuries, orthopedic injuries, infectious disease and research-related exposures, and acute illness in an outpatient setting.
- Well-developed assessment, interviewing, counseling, problem-resolution, and crisis intervention skills.
- Well-developed oral and written communication, data analysis, organizational and training skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state, federal, health center and university regulations related to administering medications and maintaining appropriate medical records.
- Computer and EMR entry skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a clinician team as well as function independently under established guidelines.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.
- CPR, BLS or ACLS certification.
Preferred Skills And Abilities
- DOT FMCSA Medical Examiner Certification (or eligible)
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education or Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- CT APRN license (or eligible) with ANA certification OR CT PA license (or eligible).
- Prescriptive privileges (or eligible) in the State of Connecticut, federal DEA license and CT DCP license for prescription of controlled substances.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional slight lifting.
- Lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds when transferring a patient from chair or wheelchair to exam table and turning patients for examination.
- Proper body mechanics must be used when maneuvering patients.
