About the Role

Positions in this job family are responsible for providing advanced health care to individuals, families, or groups as an advanced or expert clinician. This includes assessing individual health, analyzing data to determine medical and nursing care needed, planning treatment strategies, and evaluating responses to interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced primary, secondary, or tertiary health care for individuals, families, or groups at an expert clinician level.
  • Performs comprehensive physical examinations, secures health histories, orders laboratory tests, and conducts other diagnostic procedures.
  • Reviews and analyzes laboratory tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic data to determine diagnoses and prescribe pharmaceuticals within the assigned specialty.
  • Formulates goals and strategies for meeting individual health care needs; consults with physicians or other providers as needed.
  • Provides advanced professional expertise and technical assistance to nurses, therapists, and ancillary staff in implementing health care strategies.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities related to health care services provided by licensed and non-licensed health care members.
  • Counsels patients, family members, and others on health problems, treatments, drug usage, and other related matters.
  • Recertifies patients for skilled nursing care under Medicare requirements.
  • Ensures continuity of individualized health care programs through collaboration with physicians and other health care team members.
  • Identifies community health care needs and recommends strategies to provide comprehensive health care.
  • Provides education and training to community members and health care teams regarding health care needs.
  • Develops and recommends practice standards for assigned programs; evaluates care outcomes and suggests improvements.
  • Informs local administrators of community health needs and implements corrective actions to ensure quality care.
  • Performs other related duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.

Requirements

  • Valid Oklahoma license as a Registered Nurse by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
  • Recognition as a certified Advanced Practice Nurse by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
  • Three years of experience as a Registered Nurse plus one year of experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • Approval for prescriptive authority requires current licensure in Oklahoma as a Registered Nurse and as a Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within 30 calendar days of the entry-on-duty date.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse must hold a graduate degree at an advanced practice level or a post-master’s certificate at an advanced practice level if the master’s degree is in nursing.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and chemistry.
  • Knowledge of medical diagnosis techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of nursing or health care delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of ambulatory care, laboratory and X-ray procedures, and other diagnostic techniques.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical agents, their usage, and contraindications.
  • Knowledge of minor surgical procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
  • Ability to provide advanced specialized nursing care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to instruct and counsel clients.
  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic programs.
  • Ability to apply emergency and first aid measures.
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to diagnose and treat patients successfully.
  • Ability to plan and provide educational training to nursing and allied health providers, community organizations, and groups.
  • Ability to provide instruction and counseling on preventive or restorative health care.
  • Proficiency in the English language to perform essential functions.

Special Requirements

Some positions may require the master’s degree and/or experience to be in a specialized field such as pediatrics, family practice, orthopedics, obstetrics-gynecology, or geriatrics.
