Advanced Controls Engineer

The Advanced Controls Engineer will work on software design and development for the electromechanical controls systems of BAC’s products. You will be part of a growing team leading our digitalization journey, challenged to innovate and expand our digital footprint. Responsibilities

  • Participate in controls software development projects to provide technical solutions for required software features and implementations.
  • Create software specifications to meet controls systems requirements and customer input.
  • Design, develop, and document software systems to control fan motors, pumps, valves, safety switches, heating elements, sensors, and other features using electrical and/or mechanical control inputs/outputs.
  • Implement features requiring data communication into and out of BAC units for connection to customer building management systems and other control systems using industry-standard protocols such as Modbus and BACnet.
  • Use diagrams and flowcharts to illustrate algorithms aligning with required controls software features/functionality.
  • Produce efficient and elegant code that meets software specification requirements.
  • Analyze complex software issues and solve problems.
  • Provide inputs for “best practice” rules for software development and activities to promote standardization and security.
  • Use industry-accepted best practices and current code-compliant designs in all relevant work.
  • Identify and implement improvements to software development processes to increase productivity and quality of deliverables.
  • Support field issues, including troubleshooting, debugging, and upgrading software to meet customer expectations and timelines.
  • Provide technical support for other departments.
  • Coordinate and participate in software design and code review within both internal and external development teams.
  • Support controls hardware development, including control panel layout, wiring diagrams, I/O selection, and component specification, in partnership with panel suppliers and the broader controls team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing electro-mechanical control systems software.
  • 5+ years of hands-on controls implementation experience, including system integration, commissioning, start-up, and field deployment.
  • Hands-on controls hardware experience, including wiring, sensors, actuators, and I/O, with the ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience in HMI layout/graphics preview software.
  • Excellence in managing complexity and valuing differences.
  • Software development Agile experience.

Skills

  • Experience in HVAC applications (a plus).
  • Proficiency in software languages such as C/C++, C#, Python, Structured Text, and PLC languages (e.g., Modicon, Carel, or Beckhoff TwinCAT).
  • Knowledge of issues tracking systems and DevOps (a plus).
  • Knowledge of revisions management software, such as GitHub (a plus).
  • Experience with electrical control cabinet/panel design, field wiring, and hardware integration (a plus).
  • Excellent remote communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to reasonably estimate and plan software projects.

Working Conditions

  • While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk up to 30% of the time.
  • This position requires travel, both domestically and internationally, up to 25% of the time.

Pay

$75,300 - $129,100
