Advanced Certified Medical Assistant (Non-Exempt)

About the role

Medical Assistants (MA) in the medical office setting support providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. The MA may assist with clinical procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and provide administrative support to ensure smooth daily operations. The MA functions within their defined scope of practice (based on office type clinic/HOD), under supervision, and in alignment with Mercy's mission and standards of care.

Responsibilities

• Greet and room patients, obtain vital signs.
• Complete Advanced Standard Rooming (applicable only in Primary Care).
• Collect and update medical history to include medication history.
• Prepare patients for examination and assist providers during exams and procedures.
• Perform basic diagnostic tests (e.g., urine dipstick, glucose, EKGs), as deemed competent.
• Document care accurately and timely.
• Reinforce patient education once provided by the provider or nurse.
• Maintain exam room cleanliness and ensure adequate supplies are available.
• Assist with scheduling diagnostic tests, specialist referrals, and follow-up appointments.
• Perform front office tasks such as answering phones, patient check-in/check-out, and managing faxes and scanned documents.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff meetings.
• Follow all infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory procedures/policies.
• Other duties as assigned within the scope of the Medical Assistant role, based on office type (HOD or clinic), and in accordance with applicable policies and state regulations (i.e., vaccinations).

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• New hire must attend MA Clinic Academy training.
• For Hospital Outpatient Departments: BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program (preferred).
• One year of experience in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting (preferred).
• For Non-HOD Clinics: BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (preferred).

Work Environment

• Outpatient clinical setting with frequent patient interaction.
• Requires standing, walking, lifting, and use of clinical equipment.
• Potential exposure to infectious materials; PPE provided.

Physical Requirements

• Push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Prolonged standing and walking each shift.
• Ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.
