About the role

Under the supervision of a physician, this role provides inpatient and outpatient management, consultations, and co-management of surgical patients using established practice guidelines and evidence-based clinical standards.

Responsibilities

• Assess the physical and psychosocial status of patients through interviews, health history, physical examinations, and diagnostic studies to develop diagnoses and treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
• Perform surgical wound closure, incision and drainage, debridement, and dressing (surgeon must remain in the immediate area).
• Scrub with collaborating surgeon in the operating room.
• Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as credentialed.
• Diagnose medical and surgical problems and prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
• Implement appropriate management based on laboratory results, physical assessments, diagnostic studies, therapeutic measures, and admission/discharge care following evidence-based medicine.
• Identify, analyze, and resolve patient care issues to improve outcomes.
• Dictate and document patient information accurately and in a timely manner.
• Provide patient education and preventive health services.
• Conduct or participate in multidisciplinary rounds.
• Participate in the department call rotation and/or weekend/holiday rounding as required.
• Prescribe medication.
• Participate in quality initiatives to ensure attainment of key quality indicators.
• Support IRB-approved clinical research/trials by ordering diagnostic tests, prescreening patients, recording results, administering interventions, and documenting outcomes per protocols.
• Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and federal/state/local standards.
• Comply with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
• Act as a role model and resource for staff.
• Assist in teaching students, residents, and interns in complex techniques and procedures.
• Participate in the review and revision of policies and procedures.
• Establish relationships with professional and health-related groups within the community.
• Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families.

Qualifications

Education/Training

• Nurse Practitioner: MN, MSN, DNP, or PhD/DNS degree in nursing.
• Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program.

Licensure/Certification

• Nurse Practitioner: APRN license in Florida; national advanced certification from an approved nursing specialty board (required for licensure applicants after July 1, 2006). Current BLS certification.
• Physician Assistant: Current Florida licensure. Current BLS/healthcare certification.
