About the role

The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI) provides care to New Mexicans across six divisions, including inpatient psychiatric care for civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the state’s largest behavioral health complex, NMBHI serves over 250 inpatients/residents daily and 400 outpatient clients monthly, supported by over 600 employees.

This role delivers nursing care to patients in the Adult Psychiatric Division/CARE, providing direction to direct care staff and leading nursing activities to meet hospital goals.

Responsibilities

  • Administer oral and injectable medications to relieve anxiety, control behavior, and treat physical conditions.
  • Perform physician-ordered treatments to ensure optimal physical and mental well-being of patients.

Requirements

  • Current or eligible license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, including temporary licensure for employment at a specific institution.
  • Two years of experience relevant to the essential duties of the classification.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license and ability to obtain a Defensive Driving Certificate.
  • Must pass pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing (safety-sensitive position).
  • Successful completion of a nationwide criminal background check and HIPAA training.

Qualifications

  • Experience caring for individuals with mental illness.
  • Experience providing comprehensive nursing care and administering all types of medications.
  • Licensure in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act (Section 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16.12.1 through 16.12.20 NMAC).

Working Conditions

  • Work in a hospital and office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminals, computers, and phones.
  • Exposure to mentally and behaviorally challenged residents who may exhibit unpredictable or violent behaviors.

Pay

$33.12 - $49.68 hourly / $68,886 - $103,330 annually.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
