Description

The Adult Home Resident Companion & Activity Volunteer helps foster a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for individuals living with mental illness and other challenges that make independent living difficult. Through companionship, conversation, and participation in social and recreational activities, volunteers help residents feel connected, valued, and supported in their daily lives. Volunteers may also provide occasional assistance to staff with special projects or activities as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spend time with residents through conversation, games, crafts, walks, music, and other shared activities
  • Encourage participation in meals, recreation, and community events
  • Aid in recreational, educational, or wellness activities such as arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, mindfulness exercises, and seasonal celebrations
  • Offer encouragement and a supportive, non-judgmental presence
  • Help create a warm, stigma-free atmosphere that promotes dignity, inclusion, and independence
  • Provide occasional assistance to staff with activity preparation, special events, or other non-clinical tasks as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all Mercy Haven safety guidelines

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Courteous, patient, and respectful of individuals living with mental illness and related challenges
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality
  • Experience in mental health, peer support, senior services, or human services is helpful, but not required
  • Must complete volunteer orientation and background screening
