Adult Basic Education Teacher - Special Teacher

About the role

Provide comprehensive educational services to incarcerated adults, including literacy instruction, English Language Learning, high school equivalency programs, and post-secondary preparation. Create a well-managed learning environment that supports each student's Personal Education Plan through various instructional formats.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver curriculum aligned with state Adult Basic Education standards using multiple instructional methods—whole class, small group, and individual sessions. Instruction may be delivered in person, via distance learning, or using a hybrid model.
  • Screen students, provide ADA/special education accommodations, and modify assignments and assessments for learners with disabilities.
  • Monitor attendance, track student progress toward diploma completion, and maintain accurate records.
  • Guide resident academic tutors to ensure quality educational support throughout the facility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Professional Minnesota teaching license. Applicants with a Tier 1 license may be considered if the DOC is unable to recruit an applicant with a Tier 2, 3, or 4 teaching license in the specific licensure field required.
  • Indicate the file folder number for your Minnesota teaching license on your resume/application.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Minnesota Tier 3 or 4 teaching license.
  • Experience working in an education setting.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting.
  • Experience teaching Adult Basic Education.
  • Experience teaching Special Education.
  • Full-time teaching experience as a licensed teacher.

Physical Requirements

The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete a tuberculosis screening prior to hire.

Additional Requirements

  • Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check, including successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
  • Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will be conducted.
  • New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
  • The Minnesota Department of Corrections does not sponsor applicants for work visas, including F-1 STEM OPT extensions. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Pay

$28.11 - $54.60 / hourly; $58,693 - $114,004 / annually. Compensation for the successful candidate will be based on the level of education attained and number of years of prior teaching experience approved at the time of hire.

Day shift, Monday - Friday
