This position is responsible for registration and insurance verification in all registration areas within MyMichigan Health. A primary function is to perform point-of-service collections of co-pay and deductible amounts from patients at the point of discharge in a diplomatic and customer-focused manner. For casual staff, the role includes picking up a minimum of 50% of requests to provide admitting coverage in any of the Midland, Clare, and Gratiot locations and handling registration and insurance verification for all patients who present to registration.
Responsibilities
- Collects co-pay amounts, posts payments in the computer, prints receipts, and balances cash at the end of shift. Provides patients with pre-printed materials.
- Meets with patients and/or families to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies, and financial obligations upon discharge. Sets up payment plans.
- Makes financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance coverage and communicates available financial assistance programs for self-pay patients.
- Accesses insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage. Assesses co-pay and deductible amounts and documents the information.
- Performs inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions. Obtains signatures for admission consent, Important Message from Medicare, reviews patient emergency contacts, clergy information, and notifies the house chaplain.
- Collects patient demographics to complete registrations accurately, including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients. Uses available tools to verify patient identification.
- Processes Medical Outpatient, Invasive Radiology, OB checks, and Cardiac Catheterization registrations (all are future-dated registrations).
- Carries out special projects as assigned by a supervisor and performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- One year of experience working with insurance and patient accounts.
- Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge to enter patient information.
- Basic math proficiency and customer service skills.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels.
- Maintains confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies, and procedures (preferred, typically acquired through experience in a medical center or similar setting).
- Four years of experience working in a hospital setting with insurance, registration, and collections (preferred).
- CHAA certification (preferred).
- Competency in Microsoft Windows; may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.

- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
- Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device.
- Overall vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assisted devices.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
- Overall dexterity is required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements regularly.
- Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
