About the Role

This position involves registering all new patients, obtaining necessary information upon their arrival, functioning as the hospital operator, and serving as an answering service for physicians. Additionally, the role includes performing general clerical duties and other assigned functions.

Responsibilities

  • Completes registration of incoming patients (25%).
  • Understands insurances, their interactions, and basic reimbursement; explains these to the public (25%).
  • Performs duties of the physician answering service (25%).
  • Maintains appropriate files and records (25%).
  • Functions as the medical center operator.
  • Performs general department clerical duties.
  • Understands requirements for consent for treatment, guardianship, and Mental Health Consent.
  • Handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Maintains department and physician on-call schedules.
  • Responds appropriately to alarms at the switchboard.
  • Assigns beds and works closely with nursing to maintain an accurate census.
  • Participates in and attends required meetings.
  • Ensures accurate and complete demographic information to maintain database integrity.
  • Acts as a patient advocate, collaborating across multi-disciplinary lines to meet patient needs.
  • Provides activity reports to the next shift regarding on-call changes, ER situations, and House Manager updates.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft® Windows and may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (required).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
  • Experience with computers and insurance (preferred).
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Completion of annual Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training as per the Exposure Control Plan.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device.
  • Overall vision and hearing, with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health’s bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling.
  • May require repetition of these movements regularly or frequently.
  • Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
