About the Role
Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures. Ensures that patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. Interviews incoming patients or representatives and enters information required for admission into the computer database. Distributes appropriate information to ancillary departments. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Responsibilities
- Preregister patients for scheduled admissions and outpatient procedures, obtaining authorization and verifying insurance eligibility.
- Interview patients or their representatives for unscheduled admissions to obtain or verify personal information, including emergency contacts and insurance details.
- Obtain required patient signatures and provide information about patient rights, HIPAA, and visiting hours.
- Distribute hospital-specific literature and ensure patient valuables are logged and secured.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, nurse managers, co-workers, and physicians.
- Consult other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
- Collect co-payments or pre-arranged payments and record them appropriately.
- Know hospital policies and available services; refer patients to the Financial Counselor or Business Office when needed.
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and professionalism in stressful situations.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity while ensuring confidentiality.
- Maintain positive interactions with patients, families, and staff, providing explanations and reassurance as needed.
- Answer telephones politely and communicate information to appropriate parties.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly; check and stock supplies as needed.
- Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
- Adhere to dress code and maintain a neat, clean appearance.
- Complete annual education requirements and maintain regulatory compliance.
- Report to work on time, complete tasks within designated timeframes, and wear identification while on duty.
- Attend annual reviews, department in-services, and staff meetings (12 annually).
- Actively participate in performance improvement and CQI activities.
- Comply with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility and department.
- Perform other duties or jobs as assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; additional languages preferred.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to type 40 words per minute.
Physical Demands
- Normal hospital environment.
- Normal or corrected eyesight and hearing within normal range.
- Frequent standing, walking, and bending.
- Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds.
- Pushing/pulling wheelchairs with weight up to 350 pounds.
- Operates computer, telephone, calculator, and fax machine.
