About the role

The Seattle City Attorney’s Office is seeking dedicated, detail‑oriented volunteers to support the Criminal Division. Volunteers will provide administrative assistance to attorneys, advocates, and other office personnel, gaining experience in a professional legal environment while learning about municipal law, victims’ rights, and public service. The role is low‑profile, behind‑the‑scenes support in the adjudicatory process. Volunteers are prohibited from working for lawyers, law firms, district attorney’s offices, public defender’s offices, or county counsel unless authorized, and may not engage in outside employment that creates a conflict of interest.

Responsibilities

  • Data entry
  • Data analysis
  • Reviewing and summarizing police reports and court documents
  • Reviewing and correcting data for statistical purposes
  • Conducting quality‑assurance reviews of data
  • Researching best practices
  • Other duties or projects related to domestic violence, victims' rights, and resources for victims

Qualifications

  • Availability during regular business hours to volunteer in the downtown Seattle office (hybrid schedule possible with supervisor)
  • Commitment of 5–20 hours per week for 3–9 months
  • Excellent writing and legal research skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Proactive, flexible, and team‑oriented attitude
  • Previous administrative or office experience is a plus (not required)
  • Interest in municipal law, public service, or a related field is preferred

Benefits

This position is unpaid. Volunteers/externs are not eligible for medical, discretionary insurance, retirement benefits, or premium pay.

Schedule

Volunteers should be able to commit 5–20 hours per week for a period of 3–9 months. A hybrid work arrangement (some days in the office, some remote) may be arranged in consultation with the supervisor.

Workplace Environment

The Seattle City Attorney’s Office follows a Flexible Work Arrangements Policy, allowing a hybrid schedule (typically three days in the office and two days remote), subject to change based on business needs.
