About the Department
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine, consisting of approximately 50 people. This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and related fields. It offers instruction to medical and dental students, as well as research experience to Ph.D. and M.S. students seeking degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also supports a postdoctoral research training program and an array of faculty-directed research programs, many supported by extramural grants and contracts.
Responsibilities
- Compile, analyze, present, and track all financial activities of the department to ensure compliance with University, State, Federal, and industry accounting standards.
- Manage the departmental budget, including continuous financial planning, tracking, and auditing of accounting transactions.
- Formulate the annual budget with minimal supervision from the Departmental Chairman and Supervisor.
- Prepare and review monthly budget reports, grant reports (minimum of 16), animal housing and invoicing, library invoicing, and various interdepartmental invoicing reports.
- Conduct monthly budget meetings with the department chair and handle budget preparation, purchasing, and travel reimbursements (faculty, staff, seminar speakers, outside visitors).
- Review honorariums and monthly financial reports; design and implement special reports to monitor financial activity.
- Perform routine accounting duties, including decision-making on current and future budgets, allocation of incoming funds, and approval of purchase requisitions.
- Monitor faculty grants for auditing expenditures, interacting with the OSP office, grants administration, principal investigators, granting agencies, and the department chair.
- Recommend cost-reduction strategies and present findings to the Chairman and faculty/staff.
- Schedule and lead planning meetings to address purchasing, accounting, and budget activities for state and grant funds.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the ECU Financial Records System, Travel Manual, Medical Foundation Policy, and the Business Manual.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions on budget allocation, purchasing, and financial reporting.
- Experience with grant management and financial auditing.
Pay
$34,602 - $49,406 per year (Recruitment Range)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $34,602 - $44,510
