About the Role

Assist a special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students, ages 18 to 22, with limited functional language, potential behavioral challenges, and other disabilities in the special education setting. Help implement classroom programs including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under the general supervision of the program coordinator and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Responsibilities

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Assist teacher in keeping data and administrative records and preparing required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Help manage behavior of students.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including community and job site duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or concerns of individual students.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree or two years of higher education preferred.
  • If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification.
  • Ability to work with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred.

Mental & Physical Demands

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to assist with lifting adult students.
  • Ability to work in a variety of working environments at training sites in the community.
  • Move materials and equipment as well as miscellaneous items at training sites as needed.
