Position Summary

Contracted on a per-semester basis, the position will provide direct instruction to students by teaching classes, developing course outlines, assessing student progress, and utilizing the University’s assigned technology to maintain appropriate records. Avila University is seeking adjunct instructors for sociology courses that will be held on-campus.

Responsibilities

  • Lectures in sociology pertaining to understanding theory, social institutions, equity, and social change.
  • Conduct all class sessions according to the assigned schedule.
  • Provide instruction, activities, assignments, assessments, and feedback to adequately cover all objectives for the specific course(s) taught.
  • Deliver content using effectual methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience.
  • Use Canvas Learning Management System as part of course delivery.
  • Work effectively with criminology faculty and the School of Social Sciences Chair.
  • Perform other duties as needed related to assigned courses.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in specific discipline relevant to teaching responsibilities or a Master's degree in another area with 18 credit hours of sociology graduate coursework from an accredited university/college.
  • Ability to contribute to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice through their work.
  • Previous teaching in higher education experience preferred.
  • Teaching experience with a diverse population preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Multilingual skills highly preferred.
  • Successful candidates should be committed to contributing to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice through their work.
