Adjunct, Medical Assistant

An adjunct instructor in the Medical Assistant program is responsible for planning, instructing, and evaluating students in both the theoretical and practical skills required for a medical assistant career. This role combines professional medical experience with teaching skills to prepare students for certification exams and entry into the workforce.

Days and times depend on specific course schedules; evenings and Saturdays may be required.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging lectures and hands-on training sessions in classroom, lab, or online environments covering clinical and administrative aspects of medical assisting, including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, EKG, phlebotomy, medical terminology, and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
• Demonstrate proper clinical procedures and provide one-on-one or group coaching to ensure students master technical skills such as measuring vital signs, injections, collecting specimens, and assisting with minor procedures.
• Develop, administer, and grade assignments, papers, quizzes, and exams to evaluate student progress and competency.
• Provide constructive feedback, advise students on academic and career matters, and connect them to college resources to support their professional development and success.
• Participate in curriculum review and development, recommend textbooks and instructional materials, and stay current with industry trends and healthcare regulations to ensure course content remains relevant and aligns with accreditation standards (e.g., MAERB Core Curriculum objectives).
• Maintain accurate and complete student records, including attendance and grades, and submit all required academic reports and documentation in a timely manner according to college policies.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree required.
• Current national certification as a Medical Assistant (e.g., CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA)).
• Related professional experience or appropriate professional licensure in the content area or a closely related field.
• Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
• Technical proficiency with relevant medical software (EHR systems) and instructional technologies (Learning Management Systems like Blackboard).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a health-related field is preferred.
• Higher relevant certification (e.g., RN, LPN, PA).
• Prior teaching or training experience is preferred.
• Two to five years of recent, full-time career experience as a certified medical assistant in a clinical or administrative setting.
