Position Summary
This position is primarily responsible for providing clinical supervision of student clinical experience in the Surgical Technology program. Under the supervision of the Surgical Technology Program Director, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide supervision of student learning while maintaining a positive learning environment in the clinical setting, and to ensure proper documentation and evaluation of clinical performance of students.
Responsibilities
- Provide supervision of student learning while maintaining a positive learning environment in the clinical setting.
- Maintain a positive and active relationship for the benefit of the program culture, students and the College and community.
- Respond to students in a timely manner and communicate with the discipline and division via college-provided tools and resources.
- Serve as a liaison between the college, clinical affiliates, surgeons, and operating room staff.
- Monitor student progress and provide timely feedback regarding clinical performance and professional development.
- Complete required student evaluations, documentation, and progress reports in accordance with program policies.
- Facilitate student participation in surgical procedures to ensure achievement of clinical objectives and required competencies.
- Cook up student assignments and movement between operating rooms and surgical services based on educational needs, case availability, and clinical site requirements.
- Advocate for student learning opportunities while maintaining positive working relationships with clinical partners.
- Ensure students adhere to program policies, clinical site regulations, safety standards, and professional expectations.
- Address student concerns and communicate significant issues to the Program Director in a timely manner.
- Attend program meetings, faculty development activities, and clinical site meetings as requested.
- Maintain current knowledge of surgical technology practices, clinical education standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
Requirements
- Be a graduate of an education program in Surgical Technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency.
- Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (CST Certification).
- Minimum total of 2 years’ experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past 5 years.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, surgeons and healthcare professionals.
- Previous teaching, precepting or clinical instruction experience preferred.
