About the role

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a mission-driven, community-focused institution located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles. Founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising, CDU addresses inadequate medical care in the region and provides equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to deliver equitable healthcare resources across South Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching and Instruction:
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Anatomy & Physiology.
    • Design, revise, and assess courses aligned with CDU curricula, learning outcomes, and accreditation standards.
    • Employ inclusive, student-centered teaching strategies that support diverse learners.
    • Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Other Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree in biomedical sciences or a related STEM field; PhD preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Not specified.
  • Experience:
    • Meet competency requirement (experience in content area within the last five years).
    • Minimum of 2–5 years of related teaching experience desired.
    • Record of successful teaching experience in undergraduate and graduate programs preferred.
  • Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
    • Commitment to student learning outcomes and evidence-based teaching practices.
    • Knowledge of and interest in the university’s mission.
    • Demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Strong computer knowledge and skills; willingness to use multimedia instructional materials and computer-based educational platforms (smart board, WebCT/Blackboard, Proctorio, university course management system PowerCampus).
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of students.
    • Ability to establish and maintain a collegial working relationship with faculty and students.
    • Ability to maintain safety in the laboratory setting.
    • Knowledge of teaching and clinical practice in a related field.
    • Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities.
    • Willingness to perform and commitment to extra-curricular responsibilities on behalf of the department, school, and University.

Position Status: Part-time

Compensation: Pay is calculated per teaching experience and number of course units taught from the most recent Adjunct Salary Scale.

Complexity: The ability to contribute to the daily operations of the College while carrying out faculty responsibilities is critical to success in this position. The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.
