Adjunct Instructor, English for Academic Purposes

About the Role

Durham Technical Community College is hiring an adjunct instructor for the English for Academic Purposes/Continuing Education for Non-Native English Speakers department. The instructor will be responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management, working closely with the Discipline Chair to support the EFL department and its students.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned courses for the full duration of scheduled instruction.
• Prepare and maintain a syllabus, instructional plans, and Sakai sites for each class session in alignment with course objectives.
• Enforce academic policies and procedures while complying with institutional rules and regulations.
• Maintain complete and accurate course and student records, reports, and forms.
• Participate in 2–3 professional development hours per semester (totaling 5 hours for those teaching in spring, fall, and/or summer semesters), with at least 1–2 hours focused on online, technology, or hybrid/blended instruction.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president to meet departmental, divisional, or college needs.
• Prepare and maintain laboratories/classrooms, including cleanup, and recommend necessary supplies and equipment.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or a related field; OR a Master’s degree with a TESOL certification.
• Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System.
• Proficiency in modern instructional technology, including Microsoft Office, learning management systems, email, internet, student information databases, and library research databases.
• Experience or ability to work within internet-based instruction.
• Strong oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching.
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete paperwork and assigned tasks accurately and punctually.
• Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups.
• Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication within the college and community.
• Personal integrity, honesty, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of two years of experience teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language to adults, Academic English, or a related field.

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
• Ability to move between classrooms, buildings, and campuses.
• Ability to express or exchange ideas effectively.
• Occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
• Good eye/hand dexterity.

Schedule

Published meeting times, online presence for hybrid courses, preparation, and grading for contracted courses. This is a part-time position without benefits.

Pay

$35.85 - $38.30 per hour
