About the role
Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks part-time faculty to teach biology courses.
Responsibilities
- Create an effective learning environment that fosters students' intellectual curiosity, encourages critical thinking, and helps students solve problems using discipline-specific economic concepts and strategies.
- Design and deliver courses with clearly articulated, student-centered learning objectives and outcomes that promote active student engagement and ownership of learning.
- Prepare and maintain course syllabi that clearly communicate learning objectives, student learning outcomes, course expectations, and assessment methods.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies that provide regular, objective, consistent, and timely feedback to students; evaluate and document student performance using established methods and criteria and submit grades promptly.
- Employ diverse instructional methods, technologies, and pedagogical practices to address varying learning needs, abilities, and interests, while optimizing student achievement and success.
- Demonstrate excellence in teaching by continuously integrating innovative instructional technologies, staying current with developments in biology, pedagogy, and educational technology, and regularly reflecting on and refining teaching practices.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that values diversity of people, perspectives, and ideas; model respectful behavior and convey confidence in every student's ability to learn and succeed.
- Support students in achieving their academic, personal, and career goals through guidance, encouragement, and meaningful engagement.
- Commit to and model behaviors that promote inclusivity, belonging, collaboration, teamwork, and student success within the classroom and broader academic community.
- Contribute to and provide leadership within academic and professional communities, promoting collaboration among students, faculty, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure students build the biological understanding needed for progression into advanced coursework and clinical programs.
- Provide foundational Anatomy & Physiology instruction required for health science and midwifery pathways.
- Teach in a manner consistent with the philosophy, policies, procedures, and guidelines of the college.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in a Life Sciences field. Applicable disciplines include, but are not limited to, Animal Science, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Bioengineering, Botany, Cell Biology, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Field Biology, Genetics, Human Biology, Ichthyology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medicine (M.D.), Mycology, Nutrition, Ornithology, and Zoology.
- Strong academic background in Anatomy and Physiology.
- Teaching experience at the college level preferred; community college teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Experience teaching face-to-face courses and effectively integrating lecture and laboratory instruction.
- Strong classroom management, student engagement, and instructional skills.
- Proficiency with Brightspace/D2L or a comparable Learning Management System (LMS), as well as other instructional technologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively, persuasively, tactfully, and diplomatically.
- Able to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
