Core Competencies And Qualifications

  • Earned Associate's Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution required.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist with a minimum of 3 years' work experience in the Operating Room (OR) required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison between the college and the clinical site maintaining the clinical relationship with the operating room staff, provides feedback to the program about current department/hospital policies or changes in practice in the field, and makes suggestions for program modifications or improvement.
  • Orients new students to the department, including the hospital's job description for Surgical Technologists, badging and security information, parking, policy and procedure manual, the availability and location of educational resources, and all safety precautions and emergency protocols.
  • Alters assignments and or assigns student to appropriate cases as necessary to meet the student’s needs, this includes closely monitoring the student’s caseload and clinical assignments.
  • Arranges for the individual preceptor(s) for each student (if applicable).
  • Makes himself/herself available for students' questions and learning needs.
  • Makes himself/herself available for the clinical site and ST Program’s questions and concerns.
  • Exhibits professional behavior and serves as a role model for students.
  • Exhibits professional behavior while at clinical sites and when communicating with sites.
  • Promotes patient and student safety this includes reporting and documenting all safety concerns as well as properly completing student evaluations with an accurate account of student performance.
  • Makes systematic observations and objective judgments about student performance as well gives each student timely feedback about his/her performance, providing suggestions for improvement.
  • Educate and encourage preceptor(s) to complete evaluations in a timely manner with the most accurate information about the students’ performance.
  • At mid-term and the end of each rotation, prepares a Clinical Evaluation Form, documenting the progress of each student and providing guidance for future performance.
  • Maintains certification and participates in continuing education seminars and in professional development opportunities in order to maintain current state-of-the-art knowledge and skills.
  • Attends two (2) meetings a year with the Program Director and the other Clinical Instructors to discuss program goals, policies and educational methodologies.
