Adjunct faculty members are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and/or up to 8 credit hours during summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment. Must reside in the DC, VA, MD (DMV) area.

About the role

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in Mathematics to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote, and online.

Responsibilities

  • Teach specific classes in Mathematics.
  • Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
  • Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS.
  • Maintain current competence in the field of Mathematics.
  • Meet assigned classes regularly and submit required records and reports routinely.
  • Teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts.
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned, including assisting in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, or a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in Mathematics. Degrees and coursework in other fields related to mathematics are generally not accepted. Mathematics pedagogy degrees and/or coursework will not be accepted as meeting qualifications needed to teach Mathematics.
  • Qualifying degrees and coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
  • Ability to effectively teach classrooms and labs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to use instructional technology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching in higher education, especially in a community college.
  • Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.

Pay

Adjunct faculty teaching Mathematics are paid per credit hour based on rank:

  • Instructor: $935 per credit hour
  • Assistant Professor: $1,047 per credit hour
  • Associate Professor: $1,160 per credit hour
  • Professor: $1,249 per credit hour
