The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University (WVU) invites applications for adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering. Applicants with expertise in solid mechanics, dynamics and control, energy systems, and mechatronics are specifically encouraged to apply.

About the Institution

West Virginia University is designated an R1 University (Highest Research Activity) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Statler College has seven academic departments, over 3,200 students, and 135 faculty members. The Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) has 30 faculty members, approximately 600 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students, with annual research expenditures exceeding $14 million.

Educational programs emphasize experiential learning, with top placements in national and international student competitions, including Experimental Rocketry, EcoCAR, and Robotics. The WVU Robotics program has won 9 national or international competitions since 2011 and $900K in prizes from NASA Centennial Challenges.

The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, graduate programs in Materials Science Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Robotics Engineering (launched Fall 2024) in partnership with the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Morgantown is located within a high-technology corridor that includes federal research facilities such as NASA’s Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility (IV&V), the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The city is ranked among the most livable small cities in the U.S., with proximity to Pittsburgh, PA, and Washington, DC.

Qualifications

• Earned Doctorate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, robotics engineering, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to teach and develop courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to perform professional service activities within and outside the university.
• Notable record of past teaching experiences and scholarly activity preferred.
• Effective communication skills required.
