Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the largest community college district in the United States, comprising nine colleges serving over 40 cities in Southern California. LACCD offers instruction to 225,000 students annually in 600 associate degree and 400 certificate programs.

About the Role

LACCD is accepting applications for Adjunct Fashion Design Instructor positions for the 2027 Academic School Year. The purpose of this posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants for potential openings at one or more of LACCD’s nine colleges. Applicants may indicate their preferred college locations during the application process. Final assignments are contingent upon enrollment, funding, and class availability.

Successful candidates will collaborate with students, staff, faculty, and administrators, demonstrating a commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in Fashion Design over an academic year in accordance with established course outlines.
  • Participate in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs).
  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the academic field.
  • Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of full-time professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
  • Associate’s degree and six years of full-time professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment.
  • A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of district faculty, staff, and students.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee’s Policy 2900, all employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. Newly hired employees must provide vaccination status prior to starting the position.

Qualifications

  • Relevant teaching experience in Fashion Design in a post-secondary setting.
  • Ability to teach beginning through advanced classes in sewing, sketching, pattern making, draping, grading, and industry-related subjects.
  • Openness to teaching in an online or hybrid format.
  • Experience with manual pattern grading and computer pattern grading (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Tuka, Pad).
  • Experience with pattern digitizing, marker-making, and plotting.
  • Experience with 3D pattern software.
  • Skills and willingness to integrate technology (computers, multimedia, smart-boards, online learning management systems) into teaching.
  • Expertise in and sensitivity to the issues of underprepared students at the community college level.
  • Participation in professional and/or fashion-related organizations.
  • Recent experience (five to seven years) in an apparel manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with other faculty in a multidisciplinary Design and Media Arts Pathway.
  • Experience in costume making, including:
    • Corset construction
    • Period costume making (for men and women)
    • Costume illustration
    • Millinery
    • Painting, dyeing, and distressing fabrics and garments
    • Jewelry making
    • Glove making

Pay

The salary for adjunct instructors begins at $89.72 per standard hour, plus an office hour differential of $20.99 per hour for classroom assignments. Applicants with a doctoral degree are eligible for a doctoral differential.
