Adjunct - Automotive Technology

Kirkwood Community College’s Industrial Technologies Department is seeking a part-time instructor for AUT-888 Tech Lab I (4 credit hours). Fall 2026 section meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00–11:00 am and 1:00–4:00 pm, from August 24 to October 16, 2026. Adjunct faculty positions are temporary, part-time roles scheduled intermittently based on institutional need; work is not guaranteed in any semester.

About the role

A successful candidate will have at least three years of experience in automotive service and repair, including the use of common diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools, vehicle maintenance procedures, and safe shop practices. The instructor must be self-motivated, goal-oriented, and able to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to students in a hands-on learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide face-to-face instruction in the discipline.
• Teach using the department’s established curriculum, syllabus, and assessments while collaborating with faculty to maintain consistency across course sections.
• Communicate regularly with department staff, students, and faculty.
• Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.
• Utilize the Kirkwood Learning Management System to post course syllabi, relevant documents, and student grades.
• Engage in professional development activities and stay informed about developing trends and ideas.
• Abide by and enforce safety rules in a lab setting.
• Welcome, value, and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences; support and promote an environment that accepts differences.

Physical activities

Position involves working in an office setting with the following physical demands:

• Occasional (10–33%): standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
• Frequent (34–66%): reaching and close visual work (e.g., viewing a computer).
• Constant (67–100%): sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking, and hearing.

Requirements

• 6,000 hours of employment in automotive service and repair, or
• An associate’s degree in automotive technology or related field and 3,000 hours of employment in automotive service and repair, or
• A bachelor’s degree in automotive technology or related field.
• ASE G1 and ASE A6 certifications.

Preferred qualifications

• Previous experience in face-to-face instruction at a community college.
• Demonstrated success working with ESL students and supporting diverse learning needs.
• Prior use of a learning management system.

Pay

$1,314 per credit hour.
