Adaptive Physical Education Teacher (APE) | Springfield, MA

Location: Springfield, MA | School Year: 2026-2027 | Full-Time

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher to provide specialized physical education services for students in grades K-6. The ideal candidate will create and deliver individualized physical education programs that support students with disabilities in developing motor skills, physical fitness, social-emotional growth, and lifelong wellness habits.

Responsibilities

• Assess students' physical abilities, motor development, and adaptive physical education needs.
• Develop and implement individualized and small-group adaptive physical education programs.
• Collaborate with special education staff, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student achievement.
• Adapt curriculum, activities, equipment, and instructional methods to meet diverse student needs.
• Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to goals, accommodations, and progress reporting.
• Monitor and document student progress and maintain accurate records.
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local special education requirements.
• Support students in developing physical fitness, coordination, social skills, and confidence through movement-based activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Adapted Physical Education, Special Education, or a related field.
• Valid Massachusetts DESE licensure in Physical Education or eligibility for licensure.
• Experience working with students with disabilities in school, clinical, or community settings.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification or specialized training in Adapted Physical Education.
• Experience writing and implementing IEP goals.
• Knowledge of IDEA regulations and inclusive educational practices.
• Experience serving elementary-aged students.

• Ability to modify physical education activities to accommodate varying student abilities.
• Knowledge of physical, developmental, sensory, and behavioral disabilities.
• Strong classroom and behavior management skills.

Pay

Up to $50.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
