About the role
The ML LEARN Works Instructor supports the reading progress and academic enrichment of a group of elementary Multilingual Learners under the direction of the Director of Education Services. The position is part-time, seasonal, and involves in-person work from Monday to Friday from 2:00-6:30 pm, mid-August through mid-May, with occasional extended shifts.
Responsibilities
- Create and implement lessons for groups of ML students utilizing determined curriculum(s), explicit instruction, and ML resources.
- Coach students in whole group, small groups, pairs, and individually regarding English proficiency skills and the use of reading strategies.
- Monitor the progress of each student on an ongoing basis, provide consistent feedback about progress and achievement, and inform parents about their student's progress at determined intervals or as requested.
- Collaborate with fellow LEARN Works instructors for ML students to participate in class/grade level(s) enrichment.
- Ensure students complete evaluation or assessments as needed.
- Model student expectations and the Love and Logic philosophy for program participants.
- Identify students in need of extra support for social skill development and implement strategies designed to promote the students' abilities to make good choices.
- Provide participants with encouragement about their personal growth and development.
- Establish routines and procedures for the classroom that maintain a safe, positive learning climate for participants.
- Attend training sessions as required.
- Participate in observations and coaching check-ins.
- Communicate with supervisor and colleagues about needs and concerns.
- Establish performance goals, performance mid-year check-ins, and self and supervisor annual performance appraisals.
- Participate in the development of the program.
- Attend team meetings.
- Communicate with parents via communication platforms, keep parents informed of their student's progress, attend parent workshops, conduct parent conferences, and provide supervision of volunteers and feedback to volunteers.
Requirements
- Minimally one year certificate from college or technical school; or six months to a year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 2 years of experience working with elementary school students preferred.
- ESL, TESOL, or certified in a similar program. TESOL certification can be acquired shortly after if not currently certified.
- Fluency and literacy in another language preferred.
- Prior experience working with volunteers preferred.
- Computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Comfortable with online instruction and familiar with Microsoft Office apps preferred.
- CPR and First Aid Certified. Certification can be acquired shortly after if not currently certified.
