Acute Care RN-Medical Unit Registered Nurse

About the role

The Registered Nurse at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is responsible for providing and directing safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. This position requires critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Conducts an initial assessment to gather data and completes an admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.
• Identifies patient problems, develops goals, and incorporates relevant medical history into the plan of care.
• Analyzes and interprets assessment data to identify desired patient outcomes/goals and determines nursing interventions to achieve those outcomes.
• Prioritizes patient care needs and collaborates with other health care disciplines to plan interventions.
• Assigns and coordinates patient care, organizes and prioritizes care, delegates tasks, implements the plan of care, and communicates with interdisciplinary team members.
• Assists in decreasing the patient’s length of stay by helping the patient and family identify and secure appropriate services to satisfy health-related needs upon discharge.
• Evaluates patient progress, revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed, and communicates relevant clinical information to the team and physicians.
• Maintains ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members throughout the shift, at shift change, and transfer of care.
• Documents completely, comprehensively, and legibly and in accordance with policy.
• Demonstrates clinical competence and technical knowledge in cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring.
• Recognizes and responds appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias and other changes in patient condition.
• Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable.
• May assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives.
• May be asked to participate in unit-based committees and provide education to nursing staff as requested.

Requirements

• Associate degree in nursing required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Current Iowa RN license.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required, American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
• High language, intermediate to high math, and high critical thinking ability.
• Basic computer skills required.

Schedule

.9 FTE, 36 hours per week, Night shift 6:00 pm - 6:30 am, Every third weekend, Holiday rotation, Schedules are made every six weeks ongoing. Staff are encouraged to select preferred shifts for scheduling.
