About the role
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking an Actuarial Assistant to join our Global Modeling & Analytics Team in Boston. This role requires an individual with both exceptional abilities and a strong character, eager to engage in a variety of projects, particularly those involving the enhancement of technical actuarial raters and the analysis of large datasets for multiple lines of business. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing quantitative diagnostic tools, assisting in programming pricing algorithms, and collaborating with offshore resources to improve business processes and increase efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain quantitative diagnostic tools for underwriters.
- Assist in programming pricing algorithms using Excel, VBA, and Python.
- Develop new portfolio pricing models through statistical analysis, including GLMs and machine learning techniques.
- Optimize existing processes and data structures by designing and writing new code.
- Provide technical/programming support to other actuaries and BHSI teammates in other functions.
- Collaborate with offshore resources to improve business processes and increase efficiency.
Qualifications, Skills And Experience
- 0 - 3 years of experience.
- A commitment to pursuing the FCAS designation.
- Successful completion of at least two actuarial exams is preferred.
- Proven math and analytical skills as normally acquired through a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, actuarial science, or related field.
- Open to new graduates, career changers, and candidates with previous actuarial experience.
- Proficiency in SQL, VBA, and Python/R is preferred but not required if the candidate has proficiency in other languages or an aptitude for programming.
- Solid oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
- A strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates.
- Effective time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects at the same time.

Pay and Schedule
The base salary for this position in Boston is $70,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
