About the Role
The primary purpose of this position is to organize, manage, coordinate, and oversee the planning and execution of social, recreational, and educational programs for residents in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, facility policies, and resident rights. This role ensures programs are person-centered, honoring each resident’s preferences, choices, values, and beliefs while promoting their physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
Responsibilities
- Organize, manage, and oversee social, recreational, and educational life enrichment programs for residents while maintaining confidentiality.
- Develop and maintain written policies and procedures for the life enrichment department, focusing on Person-Centered Care.
- Manage the department’s budget, including labor, equipment, and supplies, and ensure operations stay within financial constraints.
- Oversee assessments, care plans, and progress notes related to life enrichment, ensuring services align with resident preferences and choices.
- Lead the implementation of an ongoing resident-centered life enrichment program that supports domains of wellness (security, autonomy, growth, connectedness, identity, joy, and meaning).
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure effective communication of services.
- Plan and develop life enrichment calendars that maximize resident involvement, including evenings and weekends.
- Determine staffing needs for the life enrichment department and provide backup support as needed. Direct the volunteer program and gift shop.
- Demonstrate leadership in ensuring quality resident care and promoting team collaboration.
- Direct resident council meetings and attend required meetings, including QAPI, Leadership, and Resident/Family meetings.
- Develop and implement an effective orientation program and ongoing in-service training for staff.
- Attend education programs to stay current with standards of practice and communicate updates to staff.
- Support and actively engage in the organization’s mission, vision, and values to promote resident satisfaction.
Requirements
- Must be licensed or registered as a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional in Ohio, meeting one of the following criteria:
- Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990.
- Two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last five years, including one year of full-time work in a therapeutic activities program.
- A qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant.
- Completion of a training course approved by Ohio.
- Ability to read, interpret, and write routine reports and correspondence with proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Strong communication skills to effectively engage with residents and encourage participation in activity programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, including assessing and interpreting resident data to meet their needs.
- Positive, service-oriented interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience managing an activity program in a long-term care facility.
