Accounts Examiner (Austin)
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is seeking a Collections Tax Accounts Examiner to join the RID Tax Collections Unit in Austin, Texas. This position requires a Texas resident with relevant accounting and collections experience.
About the Role
This role involves examining tax accounts and collecting taxes, fees, and penalties. It also includes issuing delinquency notices, contacting banks for collection efforts, and placing payment holds. The position works under close to general supervision, with minimal to limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Responsibilities
- Examine Unemployment Insurance Tax records of employers to secure collection of past-due taxes and related amounts.
- Verify delinquency and employer identity before taking collection action.
- Take appropriate actions to collect past-due amounts such as issuing Default (past-due) Notices, filing liens, and placing warrant holds.
- Respond to telephone calls, emails, and letters from employers or their representatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One year of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work for Accounts Examiner I.
- Two years of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work for Accounts Examiner II.
- Three years of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work for Accounts Examiner III.
All levels may qualify with relevant academic credits. Excellent telephone and business writing skills, organizational ability, and flexibility are essential. Experience with MS Office, Outlook, Excel, and SharePoint, as well as familiarity with TWC’s automated system or the Comptroller’s TINS/USAS system, is preferred.

- Detail-oriented professional with accounting and/or collections experience.
- Comfortable dealing with employers, accountants, and attorneys regarding sensitive debt issues.
- Confident in reviewing data to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
- Able to provide guidance to customers on the rules and regulations enforced.
Skills
- Excellent telephone and business writing skills.
- Well-organized and adaptable to shifting daily workload.
- One to two years of debt collection experience.
- Working knowledge and experience with MS Office, Outlook, Excel, and SharePoint.
- Experience with TWC’s automated system or the Comptroller’s TINS/USAS system.
