The Finance Department maintains fiscal soundness and seeks an Accounting Supervisor for the Financial Accounting & Reporting Division (FAR), which provides accurate financial information to internal and external customers while upholding high service standards.

About the role

This position assists with the day-to-day administration of the division, overseeing major functions, programs, or special projects. The Accounting Supervisor exercises professional discretion within Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and City ordinances, rules, and policies, working under the general direction of a Fiscal Manager. Upon approval, this role may work remotely up to 3 days per week or adopt a flexible schedule (9/80 or 4/10), with in-office presence required each day for flexible schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise professional accounting/finance staff in financial reporting, debt accounting, and capital assets.
  • Direct a wide range of financial reporting, including coordinating the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Establish division policies, procedures, and monitoring programs.
  • Monitor and implement new Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
  • Advise City departments on accounting and financial policies and technical procedures.

Requirements

  • Three years of professional-level supervisory experience in governmental accounting or auditing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, economics, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education meeting the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing complex financial reports and maintaining accurate accounting records.
  • Experience working with internal and external business partners and auditors.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards.
  • Experience with cross-functional teams supporting large departmental or enterprise-wide programs/projects.
  • Supervisory or directorial experience.
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or another relevant audit or financial certification.
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration, or business administration.

Skills

  • Willingness to embrace and manage change in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience working within a large, integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles and standards impacting financial reporting.
  • Ability to prepare and post journal entries and financial statements.
  • Strong leadership and motivation skills for large, diverse teams.
  • Ability to build trust, establish relationships, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills.

Pay

Pay Range: $104,728.00 to $140,337.60 annually.

Hiring Range: $104,728.00 to $127,296.00 annually.

The actual salary offer considers skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Promotions, demotions, and lateral transfers are determined by changes to the pay grade digits.
