Accounting Specialist

The City of Nowata is seeking a knowledgeable, detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to support the City's financial operations.We are looking for someone with strong practical accounting skills who is comfortable digging into financial records, reconciling accounts, identifying discrepancies, preparing accurate reports, and helping improve accounting processes.This position may be structured as full-time or part-time depending on the experience, qualifications, and availability of the selected candidate. Key ResponsibilitiesPerform bank, general ledger, and account reconciliationsResearch, identify, and correct accounting discrepanciesProcess accounts payable, invoices, and paymentsMaintain accurate general ledger records and prepare accounting entriesPrepare monthly financial statements, reports, and supporting schedulesPrepare monthly Treasurer's Reports and financial information for City CouncilAttend one regular City Council meeting each monthAssist the City Manager with budgeting, financial analysis, and special projectsAssist with grant accounting, financial reporting, reimbursements, and documentationAssist with annual audits and prepare schedules, records, and documentation requested by auditorsMaintain organized and accurate financial recordsHelp evaluate and improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial processesWork collaboratively with other City departments to ensure accurate financial informationPerform other related accounting and financial duties as needed What We Are Looking ForThis position requires someone who understands accounting—not simply data entry or basic clerical bookkeeping. The successful candidate should possess:Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and GAAPExperience with account reconciliation, general ledger activity, accounts payable, and financial reportingStrong Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to work efficiently with financial dataAbility to identify discrepancies and independently research and resolve accounting issuesExcellent attention to detail and organizational skillsAbility to prioritize responsibilities and consistently meet deadlinesStrong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of assigned responsibilitiesAbility to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive financial informationAbility to communicate financial information clearly to City leadership Previous experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, auditing, governmental accounting, or a related field is strongly preferred.Governmental or municipal accounting experience is a plus, but is not required for a candidate with strong accounting fundamentals and the ability to learn governmental accounting requirements.
