Accounting Manager
The Whitney Museum of American Art, founded in 1930, houses the foremost collection of American art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. About the role
The Accounting Manager ensures the Museum’s financial records accurately reflect its operations, including review and approval of transactions in Financial Edge, consolidation of financial results, and coordination of the annual audit and tax filing (Form 990). This role maintains confidentiality of sensitive financial, employee, donor, vendor, and institutional information.
Responsibilities
- Maintain schedules for fixed assets, work in process, prepaid expenses, deferred admissions, and others as needed.
- Track all current and future planned capital expenditures, including organizing and facilitating monthly meetings with project leaders.
- Reconcile non-cash balance sheet accounts.
- Oversee monthly recording of contributed and membership revenue, including reconciliation between accounting records and donor database and posting corrections as needed.
- Track and circulate all stock donations during the year.
- Work with Foundation & Corporate grant teams on grant applications and reporting.
- Track and properly record Rights & Licensing, Publications, Catering Commissions, and other ancillary revenue streams.
- Partner with the Office of People & Culture to ensure proper recording of benefit expenses and holding amounts, including monthly reconciliation of certain benefit accounts.
- Administer the accounting software (Financial Edge NXT), including setting up new accounts, approving and posting journal entries/subledgers, and researching and implementing system upgrades.
- Assist the Director of Accounting & Finance with the interim and year-end audit process by providing schedules and support to outside auditors.
- Assist with Form 990 and state charitable registration by providing schedules and support to outside tax preparers.
- Prepare ad-hoc reporting and handle special projects and intermittent reporting as needed.
- Work with the Director of Accounting & Finance to review and improve the department’s operations and systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (4-year degree); CPA preferred.
- 5–7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit or cultural institution (e.g., art museum).
- Experience with computerized accounting systems; Blackbaud (Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge) desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.

Pay
Annual salary range: $90,000–$100,000 (exempt, full-time position). The specific compensation offered may vary based on experience, education, and other factors.
